did people stop telling you how wonderful you were and what great potential you had and stop caring if you weren't living up to it? Did that happen to you?
I still believe people care about what I do. But I don't think anyone has said I'm not living up to my potential for 10-15 years at least.
Did you lose your virginity?
1983 when I was way too young to know better and too horny to care.
Did you fall in love?
1987 when I was a senior in high school. The object of my affection is the only person my wife has ever told me I'm never allowed to be alone with.
Did you break someone's heart?
That I'm sure of? 1986. A decade later I still heard from a mutual friend about the lingering hatred.
Did you realize how much you didn't know?
1988 Freshmen year of college. Big year of change on that one.
Did you realize you had to start over?
Every morning. Too many re-dedications to differentiate.
Did you lose your way?
Every day. Each day is a failure to walk the path I set out in the morning. Maybe tomorrow will be the day I do it right.
Did you abandon your past?
I am who I am because of my past. I have few regrets for things I did. More for things I didn't.
Did you stop looking forward and start looking back?
Never. My days as a lothario or athlete are long gone. My days as a loving husband are here and now and all the days left to me. I can only accept my past, live the present, and embrace the future.
Did you lose your first love?
1988. I dropped out of college, quit my job, and moved to another state to chase my first real love. Turns out she really wanted to just be friends.
Did you give up?
I don't think I ever did.
