The Economist, The New York Times, the BBC, sometimes CNN or Fox Tom Send a noteboard - 10/02/2010 04:28:13 PM
1. Do you primarily read or watch?

I primarily read. Broadcast journalism is usually of idiots, by idiots and for idiots. The talking heads mispronounce, their lackeys misspell and they all misrepresent the news.

2. Everybody may fudge on the question, but do you think that show/site/paper/mag/etc is biased or reasonably fair?

I like The Economist best. Its editorial staff may combine my fiscal conservatism and unwavering belief in free market systems with my libertarian social stance, but its general news stories are fair, balanced and always impeccably researched and written. Of course, as far as dailies go I end up going with the Times or the Beeb, and both of those are to left of where I am. CNN is easily on the left. I tune in to Fox from time to time because I want to hear what issues are exciting the base of the party I am still a member of. Sadly, the answer to the last question seems to be that retard, Sarah Palin.

3. Do you find yourself reading/watching things that fit your view, or do you try to pick other sources to make yourself read/watch something you find less pleasant (be honest!;))?

I try to do both. Granted, I'm not about to start reading The Guardian, but I feel that I'm well exposed to ideas to the left of me (and, when watching Fox, to the right of me).

4. Other than read and find out, do you contribute comments to websites (having to do with news, political debates, etc- not exactly talking youtube here)?

No.

5. Do you typically read the comments, regardless of whether you participate? While we're on the subject, can you name a site where one can generally find semi-reasonable comments?

No, I don't read the comments, because they're usually written by morons, cretins and people who have made attacks on the US their raison d'être. Perhaps the comments on The Economist are better (though I instinctively avoid comments on all news sites). If their letters to the editor are any indication, they probably are.
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.
