If you have a whole week, I would try to spread it out to see 2 or 3 places, but it's up to you. London is just great, although on the expensive side. I would try to visit Edinburgh and maybe also Dublin, but depends on your schedule.
Part of the reason airfares are so high is the Air Passenger Duty (so-called Green Tax ). However, airfare to London is usually the cheapest, but sometimes Dublin/Shannon are lower.
Oh, and do try to avoid STN and LTN airports on your trip through London - stick to LGW and LCY if you can.
EDIT TO ADD: For disclosure purposes, I'm technically not a Brit, either. However, be warned that some won't take kindly to you if you refer to them as "Brit" or "Brits"

So I am planning a trip to UK come September. I was looking into flights and it seems like the cheapest fares involve flying into London or Manchester. Although I would love to take 3-5 weeks and experience a lot of different areas, I will only have at most 1 week tops. Therefore, I really just want to pick one place and experience it as much as possible; with this in mind, I was thinking of Edinburgh.
So my questions are:
Which airport do you feel is the most affordable?
Would you recommend flying into London and taking a cheap flight up to Scotland instead of flying in further north at the risk of spending more?
Is there somewhere else (other than Edinburgh) you would recommend that is culturally wealthy, has enough to do for a week worth of events, has a decent food scene, and is affordable?
I know "affordable" is a subjective word, open to interpretation depending on whom you're speaking with. Let me put it this way, my traveling buddy and I are 2 students, with not a whole lot of cash, but we're willing to splurge on this vacation to make it worthwhile.
