Also, I loved Catcher in the Rye w/o knowing any of the personal story. However, it's possible that at that point I subconsciously owned the pink sweater already.

I was thinking more that why it is rated as such an important book in lists by People Who Matter* - that the controversy it created proves it was an important book.
