this is another cultural difference between Europe and the US. Not only is the mentality different - among other reasons because Europeans have far lower geographical mobility as well as job mobility - but there simply are far less jobs of that nature available in Europe. Because of social security and the whole system, even fastfood restaurants have a far, far lower turnover of staff than they do in the US, and they have much fewer staff to begin with because very few places are open 24/7 (not to mention there simply aren't remotely near as many fastfood restaurants, department stores, and the like).
So really, what Jens said might be offensive to Americans, but before everybody jumps down his throat, you might want to consider the different circumstances.
