upgraded to 512MB RAM and 80GB HDD, and a 1.4GHz Pentium M. Bought it used for $350 two years ago. The one thing that bugs me about it is the 1024x768 14.1" screen, I want a higher resolution to fit more stuff on there. Plus I'd like to be able to play massive OpenTTD games on there (open source clone of Transport Tycoon of 90's fame, some online coop games have rail networks with well over a thousand trains which stresses the CPU quite a bit), but I can use the desktop for that.
A thousand trains is insane, though. How do you ever spend any time at all on something other than replacing old trains, repairing tracks and other boring maintenance stuff? That took up most of my playing time in the original game even with more modest numbers (say about 50 trains, 100+ road vehicles, couple dozen aircraft and ships).
1) Breakdowns off
2) Start quite late so that all trains are available, pick one engine type to work with.
3) Trains only
4) Have between 2 and 10 people working on stuff simultaneously
Tracks don't need to be repaired.
I can utterly recommend visiting the link to see how it's done, joining a game requires a recent development version + some extra data files, the wiki explains most of it.

An honest question- Why do people spend so much money on laptops?

Yup, I bought a netbook and it's better than any amount of money I could have spent on a laptop. *NM*

Mine are portable design machines, so my aging Powerbook will likely be replaced by a Macbook Pro. *NM*

Well, if you want to play games, it's fairly necessary.
