I think alot of writers consider first ballot almost sacred... and that this act went against that...

Too bad, since it's not sacred.

I am curious if your opinion changed with McGwires recent admission, and what your opinion is for the admited steroid users and the HOF...

Well, if I remember correctly, the use of steroids was not specifically against the rules of baseball at the time he used them. There's some clause in the voter's guidelines about being a good citizen or something like that. The use of steroids is considered to go against that idea, so that counts against him. However, Ty Cobb himself goes agaisnt that idea; also the acts of Babe Ruth; and there are some guys in the Hall who used amphetamines. So to deny him based on the drug use is contradictory, and to say that Ruth and Cobb were products of their time and should therefore be allowed to remain in the Hall is also contradictory, because, honestly, isn't the use of steroids also "a product of the times?"

So, condiering all that, I don't consider his steroid use a factor that should keep him out of the Hall.

I believe DH's need to be evaluated in the same way you evaluate a closer compared to a starting pitcher...

I sort of agree with that. Rather I think they should be evaluated in the same way an everyday player and a pitcher are compared. They have different jobs and the criteria for judgment needs to be different. Everyday players, DHs, starters, middle relievers, and closers: they're all different and need to be judged differently.

I heard something mentioned and thought I'd share, it was proposed that a friend or fan of David Segui casted the vote just so that one day he can say I got a vote for the hall of fame... it seemed to be said in jest but it is the only thing that at least makes an ounce of sense...

Only baseball writers vote for the Hall. No fan can. If a writer is a friend of Segui, then he's not properly being a "journalist" and should have is voting privilges revoked. Frankly, whoever voted for him for whatever reason should have his voting privilges revoked.

Alan Trammel has no business in the HoF. That is from a Tigers fan in Detroit. *NM* - 10/01/2010 04:08:11 AM 180 Views
