If you really think that a remark like Reid's is in the same category as Lott's back then, you must not remember Lott's words very well (to freshen up your memory: "I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years." ). Or just trying to twist political advantage from the situation. The difference between commenting (in private) on whether a black candidate has characteristics that might make white voters in certain areas uncomfortable, or declaring in a speech that if the segregationist candidate had been elected in 1948, the US would be a better place now, is rather large.
