This will not include an anaylsis of the players' stats. This rant is geared toward those of you who already have an understanding of baseball and its history, and a knowledge of the players involved.

I'll start with the one who did get elected: Andre Dawson. Just of the top of my head, I'd say he's a borderline HoFer. I'd have to research him to say yea or nay, but I won't argue his wothiness.

Bert Blyleven: Snubbed again. A long, very good career, with numbers to support him. I just don't get why he hasn't been in the HoF for years now.

Robert Alomar: To me, he's a sure-thing HoFer. One of the top five (if not top three) second basemen of all-time. Yeah, he'll probably get in next year, but why not now? Because he spit on an umpire ONCE? What, is not electing him punishment for THAT? I sure as hell hope not. It just doesn't make sense. (Just so everyone's aware, I know that no player has ever gotten 100%, not Ruth, or Williams, or Henderson, etc. I think that's moronic, but that's another subject.)

Jack Morris: This one they got right. I'm amazed that anyone thinks that one very good season, and one fantastic World Series game, makes him worthy. He was above average for a long time, mostly an innings-eater, but he was never more than that for nearly long enough.

Tim Raines, Barry Larkin and Mark McGwire: I can see all of them not getting elected on the first ballot. They all need to have their careers analyzed, but it's been long enough for that for all of them. They should all have been elected, especially Raines and Larkin.

Alan Trammel and Dale Murphy: I think Trammel should be in. He's much like Raines, Larkin and McGwire. Murphy, I think of like Dawson. I'd have to take a good look at his numbers. But when you think of players like Dawson, and Jim Rice (elected last year) and Tony Perez, one has to wonder, what's makes them worthy and Trammel and Murphy not worthy.

Martinez and Baines: Pretty much career DHs. Do DHs deserve the same kind of consideration that guys who play the field do? That's a tough one, but I have to ultimately say, yes. It's just the way the game is now. But if all that can be judged is their hitting, they need to be GREAT hitters. Martinez: I really want to say yes, but I'm still undecided. Baines: I think he falls just short.

But here's the thing. Someone voted for David Segui?! Someone actually looked (I assume) at David Segui's career and said to his/herself, "David Segui belongs in the Hall of Fame." I'm sorry but, no. Anyone with an inkling of baseball knowledge, SHOULD immediately discard Segui out of hand. There's not even a reason to debate it. It's beyond comprehension that he should get a single vote. He was never even the best player on his own team. This makes me more frustrated than players not getting elected that should.

Alan Trammel has no business in the HoF. That is from a Tigers fan in Detroit. *NM* - 10/01/2010 04:08:11 AM 180 Views
