While I was raised in the southern parts of the country I learned to drive in the north. Truth be told I was very timid when learning to drive a standard but at the time I was living in northern Wisconsin and it was necessary due to the weather.
It took me about 100 miles to get the foot, hand, listen to the engine, watch the RPMs and all that down. It seemed so complicated at the time but once I got it...now I prefer manual over automatic.
Standard is much more fun to drive even in the best of conditions.
Why is that, I wonder?
Okay now this will seem sort of sexist...
I'm female, all that stuff is supposed to be harder for us than for males. Not sure why that is but that IS what society would have us believe.
Anyway, now I live in Vermont. While the weather here is similar to that in Wisconsin there are mountains here that are much higher than anything found in Wisconsin. What I don't understand is how there are so many people here with automatic transmissions when they would obviously have more control with standard.
Hmmm...maybe it is time to turn this into a survey.
We now have 33 inches ( 83.82 centimeters)
1: Do you have snow? How much?
Umm... about a quarter inch.
2: Do you drive an automatic or a standard?
Automatic.
3: Why do you choose to drive your above answer?
I'm lazy and I think its silly to drive standards in any type of city situation. Plus, I prefer not having to deal with a shit load of shifting, paying attention to stalling, or anything else like that when driving in bad weather. Put studded tires on your auto and drive a bit cautiously then you're good. Btw, did I mention I'm lazy? Not just lazy, but full blown totally an american piece of shit lazy.
4: Where do you live?
Cincinnati, now.

5: How many licks does it take to get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop?
Your mom. That's right. The cat is out of the bag. Your mom.

Acceleration is useless in automatics. I don't know why people even try to argue this.

As I said before, its a question of preferring control, not of "needing" it.

More control is better because, as you say, you know what's coming up on the road.
