I seem to remember saying something along those lines. The initial epiphany came in Russia in 1994 when I saw a dirt trail going between two buildings to a grocery store. The mud was dry, but when it was wet it had been scored with dozens of marks from high heels that had dried. I thought, "My God, women are putting on heels to walk through MUD to get to a GROCERY STORE."
Perhaps that's a bit excessive in the one direction, but the US seems to go too far the other way. I haven't seen people going out in pajamas, but I'd certainly have posted a properly indignant thread of the "O tempora! O mores!" bent if I did.
