for my grade 12 English class? I have to do a seminar on a general theme in the said book.
Are you looking for a full length novel, a short story...?
If you want challenging I can think of a couple that would be good depending on what you can get away with. The Things They Carried by Tim O'brien is an excellent book about Vietnam. I'm not sure if you can get away with it or not, as it's downright brutal in some parts.
If you want something a bit different there's a book called Ceremony by Lesli Marmon Silko. It would be a challenge as well. It's a native book about a guy trying to heal after his experiences in WWII. If you were going to teach/write about that one though I'd suggest doing some research or even contacting a Native Lit teacher. I can give you the email of a couple I know that would be more than willing to help with it.
Alternatively you could just go with the old standby books and do Brave New World, or Fahrenheit 451. (I wouldn't really consider Fahrenheit a challenging book, but I'm sure some schools might).
Other suggestions...As I Lay Dying, Cat's Cradle, or the Handmaid's Tale.

As I Lay Dying is a good call. Think it was about twelfth grade when i read it.

Most public schools would expel this poor kid for choosing a book that deals with those themes.

Why not? The underlying themes are good - especially for high school.
