That's a reasonable position. Joel Send a noteboard - 20/11/2009 12:26:59 PM
but the fact is that it IS a factor.

And it's stinky and aggravates my breathing. I keep my stink and dust and hay-hair in my truck and shower it off when I get home, I think least someone else can do is keep their cigarette smoke in an open area.

What's not reasonable is telling people they can't smoke outdoors and/or in their cars, exclusively citing second hand smoke as the reason. I haven't done a lot of digging, but the newsfeed at work a year or so ago claimed IL had become the first state to ban smoking ANYWHERE but ones home. It caught my eye because my employers HQ is in IL and they have a policy of their own that says you not only have to be outside the building but OFF THE PROPERTY to smoke. It makes me wonder what employees in IL do now; do they simply chain smoke as much as they can before work, to make it to their next cigarette 15 hours later? The company won't let them smoke on company property, and the state won't let them smoke anywhere else. I mean, seriously, telling people you won't freakin' HIRE them if they smoke, requiring submission to nicotine tests when they take your application? That's seriously messed up, IMHO.

Sure, smoking is known to be harmful, but so are a helluva lot of other things that don't get you smugly dismissed as subhuman (that concept seems to be a recurring theme today. ) It's in the same vein as sin taxes or even outright bans on fatty and/or high cholesterol foods in some cities. I'm a great believer in consensus and democracy, but your right to swing your arm still ends where it hits my nose, and this is still a constitutional republic where minority rights are protected from a tyrannical majority. So, yeah, if you're willing to let me smoke a cigarette on my own freakin' front porch, I'm willing to exhale away from you. The one thing we DON'T need is yet another highly addictive illegal drug, and if the soccer moms won't bitch about how much of their tax money goes to my medical care, I won't bitch about how much of MINE goes to educating their kids. :)
