I'd suggest doing a quick google search for bars that fit the bill, and then pick a night to go. Thursday through Saturday are very busy at most bars, the rest of the week is a bit more tame...so pick a day depending on what you're looking for. Sunday will be the slowest, and Friday probably the busiest.

Personally I think Wednesday and Thursday are the best bar nights of the week...not so busy you can't get a drink, and not so empty you feel like a loser for being in an empty bar.

Hm. Wednesday sounds good. Am planning to use it as a reward for when I finally get caught up on school stuff.

Anyway, yeah, do you think there's a difference in social acceptability between a guy going alone and a girl going alone?

In my mind it's more acceptable for a girl going than a guy. I mean...outside a sports bar. Guys can go to sports bars alone til the cows come home...but clubs and stuff...it seems a bit weird or like you're trolling for ass if you're a guy alone in a bar/club.
