What it means is that you get an Allen wrench (I think they call them "hex wrenches" these days) and a bunch of really heavy screws with the hexagonal indentation at the end. If you screw them in tight enough the shelf should hold steady very well. Of course, you have to line everything up right and make sure you tighten things incrementally.
I've settled on the Carter Continental - the metal is champagne plating, with clear glass, and espresso wood accents. And I'll get the desk (the shorter 40" return) with it.

The bookshelf is pricier (~$500), but also prettier. I looked through the site you linked, and the only items that appealed to me were the $1000+ huge constructions. So I feel good about it.
I'm also going to get black blinds, a hanging plant to put on top of the bookcase, and a tree. The live green will compliment the silver/black scheme very well.
I'm excited. My thanks to you, and Sareitha.
Buying bookshelves - is this too pricey?

Way too pricey for what you get. *NM*

They look nice, but there's no way I'd pay $950 for them, personally.

Yes, by about a factor of 10.
