I pretty much only tip for meals. 10%-20% is the range in my area...depending on how cheap/generous you are. I usually tip at least 20%. If the service is bad, I'll tip less. If it's terrible, I won't leave anything. But I've only done that a couple times.
When this has happened, did you speak with management or leave a note explaining why you didn't tip? If so, did it make a difference? Have you gone back to those places since?
For meals, it is expected for every visit. I only tip for "sit-down" meals. I wouldn't tip at a McDonalds or such.
How about coffeehouses/delis/bistros? Places where you might order at a counter but have the food brought to you a table?
