but that was the worst blown call since, well... since a few days ago actually! WTF is wrong with baseball this year? more specifically, did they get these umpires from the local school of the blind or what?
for those not paying attention at home, i'm referring specifically to the double play which was only called one single out at the top of the 5th inning tonight. maybe the umpires are doing their best to convince MLB to institute instant replay for all close calls next year, otherwise i don't see any reason why the officiating should be so shitty this year

The technology is there and it can help, so why not use it? The umpires should be able to make their calls on the field, and each team should have one instant replay appeal per game. If the team wants, they can make the appeal and the umps check the replays. If the call on the field is overturned as a result of the replay, the team gets to keep their appeal. If the call is upheld, the team loses their appeal and cannot appeal again for the remainder of that game, including extra innings.
Isn't it a similar system in place already for home run calls? I'm not sure exactly what that policy is.
In other words, I understand the purity and tradition of having umpires who make calls and I wouldn't want to take away from that. But the team should have an instant replay recourse for when they feel a bad decision has been made.
The instant replay appeal, of course, should not be applicable for calling balls and strikes, but only for plays on the field.
