Thats because you're a horrible sexist
Clearly
So his ego was more important to him than his obligation? But that same ego wouldn't prevent him from expecting/accepting that his company lower their expectations of him and hold him to a lower standard than the rest of their employees?
Most people (men in particular if you believe some of the vocal women who blame male bankers for the recession) are quite proud, and there is a difference between accepting and expecting to take a back seat during a stressful period. The company might well have offered him such a role, or he refused to take paternity leave, in which case it's clearly an unavoidable situation.
Of course all I was basing my comments on was what was written in the OP, if he's been taking holidays to the caribbean and stealing office supplies then thats another matter.
It could be if his "mistake" had consequences for the company beyond what they were willing to accept.
Then in my humble oppinion he shouldn't have been put in a position to make those mistakes, if he's there by his own choice then of course it's his fault, as I said, we dont know enough details to give a full analysis, I'm simply going on what was written.
Okay, please read the below-linked response (if you haven't already) and let me know your thoughts. I'm genuinely curious if it changes your opinion.
If you are from Betelgeuse, please have one of your Earth friends read what I've written before you respond. Or try concentrating harder.

Where I work you have to use your sick leave and annual leave to cover maternity leave.
