Always too young or too old, you should of been there for the moment when I joined my friends after graduation and I had to decline joining them for a beer because I was only 20, I rapidly grew a beard after that since I had to teach a week later, it was rather scraggly.
One of the few things I like about the military these days is at 29 I am an 'old man', kind of a unique experience.
You've peaked my curiousity though, 'why do you seem surprised' and 'how old are you?' being foremost.

It's just you seemed to be, you know, a fair bit older. I'd have guessed you at 40 at least - the military stuff might have given a clue to the contrary to folks knowledgeable about all that, but that I am not.
I actually guessed you as roughly my own age, but then I just defualt to assuming anyone who can carry on point for point with my ramblings as 'my age', which might be a bit unfair because I think of Tom as noticeably older, and he's about the only one besides you I think of as not thinking they're frickin foriegn policy experts because they can find Djibouti on a map. Though that's not really fair, I have excellent conversations with many people, but really I don't feel genuinely challeneged much beyond you, Tom, Joel, Cannoli, and Greg, and frankly I think Cannoli views me with contempt as a semi-neocon and Greg doesn't seem to reply, I probably insulted him. More's the pity, he's a rude SOB, but never presents cookie-cutter ideas. I actually have no idea how old they are, heck, they could be teenagers for all I know, but I usually think 'older than me'.
The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.
