On the other hand, a complete and total free market becomes predatory quickly. Government has a role to play - it builds roads, manages the mail (though that can and should be scaled back, particularly by cutting out advertising from the mail, which would cut volume), ensures that monopolies aren't created (at least in theory) and organises the national defence.

Taking into account the caveats listed above, I agree with Wynn. Give businesses an opportunity to make money and they will employ people. Those people will have money to buy things, get a mortgage for houses and save for the future. If you REALLY want to make sure that the economy takes off, give huge tax incentives for companies that employ large numbers of skilled or semi-skilled workers because they will have to pay them better.
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.
