I think it hurts the prestige of the award not simply because he has done nothing of consequence to deserve it but I think at least here in the US it will be viewed as the committee making a blatant political statement about our internal politics. Basically it will be seen as the "not Bush" award. The more the award is seen as political instead of simply recognizing the advancement of peace and human right the less anyone will care about it.
Was Bush ever considered for his work in fighting AIDS in third world countries? Of course he wasn't even though his efforts helped millions and that sort of partisanship gives the prize a taint of politics that will be very hard shake off.
As much I am enjoying the bind this puts Obama in overall it makes me sad. There should be a group the recognizes and awards individuals for their efforts to advance peace and human rights without regard for personal politics.
