How did you get put all those WEIRD SPACES in all my comments?! Joel Send a noteboard - 20/03/2017 07:21:30 PM

Sorry, I am embarrassingly proud of this literally each and every time I see it. I wish there were a way to change my default PRINT font.

See what I mean?

Well, the link does, but it does not GO anywhere. Nor does MB Rules, despite having one of those "this is a BUNCH of really IMPORTANT stuff that NEEDS to be read by EVERYONE on the site" internet exclamation signs on it. I brought that up seven or eight years ago (think I even submitted a Bug or Suggestion about it,) noting that is the kind of thing that might greatly benefit the newbs on whose enduring presence all web sites depend. But the consensus was that 1) all wotmaniacs already know all intricacies of the sites formatting mechanics and 2) we don't need no stinking rulez (except the usually unspoken "no directly linking porn" rule,) which frankly missed the point entirely. Those familiar with the site are exactly that, but a resource that was not empty might be enticing to some NEWBS and cushion the blow for others unaccustomed to our eclectic and engaging (i.e. weird and opinionated) community.

Well, wotmania taught me to indent and bold, etc, but it didn't allow a lot of the other stuff. I am hardly a n00b But neither do I know jack shit about html or anything like

Literally all I know about html codes is contained in that list Isaac compiled: The only reason I know the "font color=" tag can use hex codes instead of actual color names is because matching unnamed colors was a colossal pain until I found that color matching site (one of many) to do it for me. Now I just save a screen shot, go there, and let it tell me what to type after "font color=".

View original postI meant to mention it again in that "if you could change just ONE thing about RAFO...." thread, because I still think it a good idea. When he still regularly posted, Isaac was kind enough to compile a fairly extensive list of all html codes revealed and discovered to function on RAFO: There are far more than I had previously expected—FINDING it, however, requires 1) knowing it exists, 2) knowing WHERE (i.e. the RPMB, which virtually no one but its regulars ever visited even when it still had visitors) and 3) doing a SEARCH for Isaacs posts there. Be sure to use lots of key words, too; he ran and participated in many games there, so had tons of posts. At the very least, the site could benefit from putting all that stuff at the Help link, if only because most other sites I have seen use brackets rather than greater/less than signs for their html syntax.

Likewise, even a Rules section consisting of no more than "literally everything and ANYTHING except direct links to porn is fine" would be great just to let new members know (or warn them) that RAFO is essentially unfiltered and uncensored. The demand for such websites far exceeds supply (and much of the existing supply is little BUT direct links to especially unsavory porn; I like to think a global forum with up to 7,000,000,000 participants is capable of offering more than a Boolean extreme choice between Mr. Rogers and snuff films.)

Oh, by the bye: The color code for the (default) border and quote backgrounds is #CCCCFF (at least one site calls it both "Periwinkle" and "Lavender Blue," but using either of those in place of the hex code does NOT accurately produce the color accurately here.) So putting a font color tag around something like this will make it that color in a post, but invisible in all quotes of it. Except for members who have customized their background to a different color; in those cases, it is still possible to save a screen cap, pop it into this site, hit "show image" and then click the section with the desired color to get its hex code to display, but that is pretty useless unless 1) targeting a specific person and 2) knowing their chosen background color. It is mildly entertaining though on sites that allow neither customized colors nor empty posts.

That answer your question?

EDIT: Also, a lot (though far from all) of the formatting codes are in the "Formatting" link popup next to the smilies, but I believe what you were looking for is just past that: The two little rectangles that toggle between "quote all" and "quote each carriage return separately." You can tell them apart because the first one just looks like one big page, while the second looks like a series of lines running down a page.

I had to wade through a lot of crap to get to what I needed to know, but, thank you It was the main thing different from wotmania that I never bothered to try and figure out!

No problem. I removed all the paragraph quote breaks in this last section because 1) that last response was effectively to all of them and 2) as a reminder the old fashioned way of inserting the toggles oneself still works, just takes a bit longer. I find it preferable to the new auto-breaking when responding to really long posts going back over several iterations, because I try to retain not only the comments to which I am currently responding but also my previous comments to which the OTHER person was responding. It may sound weird, but with an in depth conversation running over weeks or even months as each person has hours to spend reading, digesting and responding to the latest round, I find that really helpful to regain ones place and feel for the discussion. The auto-breaker is REALLY bad for that though, because every time it sees a carriage return it closes a quote tag, whether or not it "should." All I can say is "thank Mike/Ben for the 'preview' function."

Short form: "I had to wade through a lot of tangential gibberish to get to what I wanted to know" is my alternative motto.
