I've read posts by people like you before: you're in such a rush to show what a genius you are that you forget to make any points whatsoever. And then (and I love this) you turn it around on toher people and accuse them of being misinformed/wrong/whatever because you don't know how to formulate an argument.
97-8 Broncos. You enjoy that kool-aid, buddy LOL
97-8 Broncos. You enjoy that kool-aid, buddy LOL
You made an (unsubstantiated) assertion; I said the best teams were strong everywhere, while the Bears were basically Payton and a killer D. I supported my arguments by noting the elite talent teams repeat Champs beat on the way, as opposed to the Bears who did little before or after '85.
You fell back on conventional wisdom that defense is all (incidentally slamming all the Bucs and Ravens recent defenses) which still doesn't make the '85 Bears the best ever unless they also had the best D, a claim you rest solely on the fact they didn't allow a playoff TD. The problems with that being:
1) They DID give up a TD in the playoffs, against the Pats in the Super Bowl and
2) The '71 Cowboys did NOT give up a playoff TD--not even to the '71 Dolphins, the team that won their next 17, the next two Super Bowls, and MOST people consider the best team ever.
At least three other teams got to the Super Bowl without surrendering a TD, including the Giants the year after Chicago and the 49ers two years later.
That said, what makes the '85 Bears D so impressive is that they didn't surrender ANY points until the Super Bowl (the '86 Giants gave up a field goal when they beat SF 49-3, but still outscored them more than Chicago did ANYONE in '85. ) A good offense AND defense will still beat a great defense though. Which brings us to:
Your response that I should "look at Super Bowl winners since 1980" even though I'd already looked at two; I then listed Super Bowl teams that beat BETTER defenses, including the 2006 Colts, ranked DEAD LAST against the run, who beat the best defense in the League. Did you watch that game? The Bears D did EVERYTHING and their offense refused to win.
I didn't "turn around" anything or accuse you of being "misinformed/wrong/whatever. " I said I didn't want an intellectual pissing contest, and given that the one piece of actual data you cited was inaccurate, perhaps you should be grateful. You posted with an agenda to make the '85 Bears the best D and team ever with virtually no evidence while slamming everyone else, so any kool-aid is there. YOU made the comparison and my response was "reckon we'll never know, but I frankly doubt it. " Since we can't test your theory let's just agree to disagree, shall we?

Defensive pressure trumps absolutely everything else in football. '85 Bears were the kings.
