The primary cause of premature death in persons with mental health issues is suicide. Since suicidal tendencies are one of the symptoms of depression and bipolar disorder, how can you say it doesn't kill them?
It wasn't the depression/bipolar disorder that killed the person; it was the <insert tragic method> that killed them. The underlining depression/bipolar disorder is what prompted the action. So to remedy the issue long term, you don't remove the <insert tragic method> from the person...as they may try <a different tragic method>. Instead you pursue treatment and help for the underlining issue that's causing the problem in the first place (i.e.- The depression/bipolar disorder).
So to bring this all the way back around....every other mental health issue we treat by addressing the underlining issue (the depression, bipolar disorder, anorexia, OCD, etc.)...however, instead of treating transgender people, we enable and may even applaud them for their migration from reality.
