Trump is the first person to openly challenge (1) our open borders policy, (2) our imperial foreign policy, and (3) the implicit assumption that free trade helps America (or at least that somehow it's not hollowing out thousands of once thriving towns).
The open borders policy has been pushed by an unholy alliance of neo-Marxists like La Raza who want to destroy all borders and certain business interests (like growers) who need labor below minimum wage. But the simple fact is that people who come here illegally are breaking the law. Trump is right when he says either we have a border or we don't.
In foreign policy, I think it's high time we stopped policing places out of some notion that we benefit when we dictate foreign policy and focus on how it directly benefits us.
With respect to free trade, we really have destroyed millions of lives in the process of opening ourselves to free trade. The "giant sucking sound" Ross Perot warned us about has become a roar.
so what's your (or Trump's) Big Plan to "close the border"? i mean, 30+ years of republican economic plans are slowly but surely making the US non-viable for economic advancement. at some point supply-side is going to make it so even the immigrants don't want to come here because they won't be able to make more money than they could at home. but hey, it's alright, because Larry Ellison got to buy TWO more Hawaiian islands with his tax cuts!
