Not quite sure what your point is... gban007 Send a noteboard - 18/03/2016 06:11:19 AM

The point of the article is clear, and generally fair / accurate, but with your top line, are you basically in agreement with China that democracy is a joke, and so the US should be more like them in government style? Otherwise, what does it matter that the republican party members may be electing Trump? That is their democratic right...

The main problem I generally see with democracy, is the reactions of people who can't accept that what they want, isn't what the majority (or largest minority) of people want. Democracy is good when their 'side' is winning, but if the other side is winning, something has gone wrong...

Like here in NZ, in the run up the last election, a loud few Labour / Green supporters were saying how they were going to win, and that National would be out, as after all that is what they think is the right outcome. When the election ended up going the other way, you then get comments about how they can't understand how National won, or that National supporters are idiots / morons / gullible, just because they happened to have a different view.

At the end of the day, in a democracy you have to accept that the collective will of the nation isn't necessarily going to be in alignment with your view, and if you start having such a big issue with this, then perhaps moving to somewhere that either has a collective will in alignment with yours, or that isn't democratic at all and the government is alignment with your view, is the best choice. Otherwise stay, and try and exercise your right / ability to persuade others to your point of view, do what you can to swing the collective will your way, but calling people who disagree idiots or the like isn't going to achieve this.

On a different train of thought, while I wouldn't vote for Trump, having a large non democratic country disliking a potential leader, could be seen as a good thing, otherwise if democracies and autocracies elected the same types of leaders anyway, what is the point of a democracy?
