First of all, the real pain is being caused by the oil price, not the sanctions (though if you believe a conspiracy theory, the Saudis kept the pumps going at full throttle to punish Russia for Ukraine - I guess it's possible, but I think Iran is the real target). Sanctions have affected middle class and affluent Russians who like buying imported foods and they're more an annoyance than anything else (and it's the Russian counter-sanctions that are affecting them, not Western sanctions). The rouble has fallen due to the drop in oil prices, which is of course the direct fault of Putin in that over the entire course of the oil boom of the mid-2000s, little to no effort was made to diversify the Russian economy away from the energy sector. However, most Russians who support Putin aren't going to blame him for that. His supporters are people who don't buy Brie or Veuve Clicquot or prosciutto. They get drunk on cheap vodka to forget that they're living in a shitty industrial town in the middle of nowhere in Russia, and so every opportunity they get to think their country is respected (or at least just feared) is cause for celebration. They probably also bear some resentment of all those rich Muscovites with their imported foods. Those guys will continue to support Putin.
