If you remember, Obama and Boehner almost reached a "grand compromise" on the budget, the deficit and lots of other things, but Obama changed his conditions at the last moment as a sop to his own party, and Boehner said, "I can't sell that to my party and that wasn't the deal", and the thing fell apart.
Likewise, after the election Obama refused some very reasonable Republican requests, such as indexing Medicare and Medicaid to the CPI to avoid rampant growth, on the grounds that he won the election, which obviously meant that he had a right to do everything that he wanted to in his mind.
