I don't think there should be a need to apologise but I suspect there is one, due to the willingness of the media, and people on social media, to create outrage.
The story I read said the poster was pulled but the kettles were a limited run that sold out, and were now selling on Ebay for $200.
I actually think if just the handle were contoured differently there wouldn't be a comparison at all. I agree with you that there's no need for an apology, but it's easy to see why they would and I can't fault them for it.
You could be right about the sales, probably way more people own this kettle now than would ever have before.
