Reckon we'll never know, but I frankly doubt it. Joel Send a noteboard - 01/10/2009 06:11:27 AM
Historically, the few teams who won back to back Super Bowls were very very good.

'66, '67 Green Bay

'72, '73 Miami

'74, '75 Pitt

'79, '80 Pitt

'89, '90 SF

'93, '94 Dallas

'97, '98 Denver

'04, '05 NE

Those were dominating teams, each of them rock solid at every area of the ball. Two of them (the Dolphins and Broncos) won 18 games straight over two seasons. The Steelers repeated TWICE. Dallas went all the way to the Conference Championship after their repeat and should've won again, but the following year they did. And everyone knows what the '49ers did in the '80s (including the '85 Bears. ) Each of them beat elite talent to get where they were:

The Dolphins and Steelers had to contend with HoF Vikings, Raiders and Cowboys teams

The '9ers had to beat Elway and the Three Amigos before handing Buffalo the first of four straight losses

The Cowboys had to contend with that same '9ers team plus an up and coming Pack

The Pats had to beat the Steelers and Colts

I'm sorry, but the '85 Bears offense was Walter Payton and a bunch of very average pros. The 'Skins, '9ers and Cowboys were in a greatness interregnum so about the only ones capable of staying in a game with Chicago then were the Giants. And unlike the teams listed above, and most teams most years, they had definite weak spots; Willie Gault is about the only receiver who MIGHT make the Hall one day (though I wouldn't hold my breath) and Jim McMahon was a legend in his own mind. Jay Hilgenberg was the best of an offensive line that was very good, but not great. I'm not sure the '96 Pack D was in the same class as the '85 Bears, but I know the Bears offense wasn't in the same class as the Packs; we beat them by a TD (or a TD Jr. ) on a neutral field. I wouldn't mind watching the '97/'98 Broncos play the '72/'73 Dolphins, the Steel Curtain, the Montana teams or the '93/'94 Cowboys (though I might not enjoy the outcome) but against the '85 Bears I think it would be a rout, and not by Chicago.
