View original postOh, I'm sure a few people would chime in. Jeordam, Joel maybe, Tom maybe, Cannoli if he's so motivated and possibly Legolas...but I doubt it would get the knee-jerk, frothing reaction that this post has gotten. And I think you know it too, as much as you might dislike it.
I think you have the group of first-responders right, but I still think you're wrong on the main point. What pisses me off about these things (and you know I'm always the boring vanilla) is the lack of ability to put oneself in a different pair of shoes, so if someone popped up from the other side and couldn't do that, I'd be aggravated. Oh, some of us would try extra-hard to be polite for a minute, given that it would be a stranger (and there would be others immediately attacking them for the same reason), but then it would be over if the person refused to see sense.
View original postOh, I definitely agree. But when people argue so passionately that we mustn't judge all Muslims by the actions of a few, yet are also completely okay with the idea that every Christian's opinion on Islam is suspect because of some bad things done by other Christians centuries ago, I'm going to call out the double-standard. That's why I thought Ghavrel and Legolas were being unfair to Jeordam and why I spoke up.
I don't think every Christian's opinion is suspect, but I do think it's fair to hold us to the standards we claim are a core part of our very religion. The biggest reason I "argue so passionately" is that I want the same courtesy extended to me from the other side - I'm not willing to change my actions because I haven't seen that as often as I'd like.
That doesn't mean I'm not aware of the facts, and I do know there is danger that I am quite close to geographically. However, the biggest reason not to go for religious profiling is that it is impossible to do properly - take the attack on the Sikhs, for example.
Maybe it is time to start treating muslims a little differently?
