But at the same time, surely it must be noted that the former is likely to weaken the latter. Give a finger and they take a hand, and all that.

The slippery slope idea doesn't have much merit if we can't get something passed with 90% of the population supporting it. Imagine the hurdle for less popular legislation.


Perhaps there are some statistics or polls or something that suggest that, but it just doesn't seem possible to me.

Second, the whole point of a slippery slope is that the first step is the hardest, and then everything else is progressively easier. Semantics aside, this seems like exactly the sort of situation where that rule would be true.
