As I recall, the last non-Italian pope before John Paul II was Adrian VI from the Netherlands, and that was in the 1520s (!). But times have changed, and I think it's obvious the Italians will never regain anything like their former dominance. The new pope still has a good chance of being Italian, of course, but considering how Italy and Europe in general are rapidly becoming almost an afterthought for the Catholic Church, they're bound to start getting more and more non-Europeans before too long.
