If "the bible is still the bible," then what of Deborah, Huldah and Phoebe, to name but a few? Joel Send a noteboard - 13/02/2013 06:17:44 PM
I'm a "lapsed" catholic as well.
I'm a current Catholic.

2. Priests being a woman - no chance (bible/God's word)
The origins of this one are also more doctrinal than "Word of God". The specific prohibitions are not in the Gospels but Timothy's. The Bible is still the Bible. The Epistles of Paul are just as Divinely inspired as the Gospels of Matthew and John. In each case, the authors are citing Divine revelation of some kind. Paul's Apostolic infallibility is the same as the others'.

5. Gay marriage/rights - no chance (bible/God's word)
Actually the prohibitions are Old Testament and COULD be invalidated by an Ex Cathedra declaration, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Probably a good idea, since the New Testament defines marriage as between a man and a woman. There is a better chance of changing the stance on abortion than polygamy (serial or otherwise) or same-sex marriage.

Are Pauls statements to Timothy that he should drink a little wine for his indisgestion also a divinely inspired decree from God? What of I Corinthians 7:12, "But to the rest I, not the Lord, say: If any brother has a wife who does not believe, and she is willing to live with him, let him not divorce her"? The passage says outright it is NOT Gods divine commandment, but we are to regard it as such anyway?

This is the real challenge much of the Epistles present me: They are NOT, unlike the Torah and Prophets, the work of men consciously writing from divine inspiration, or at least, not always. They are essentially every document the Church Fathers were reasonably certain to be authentically written by the purported authors. Divinely inspired commandments and doctrines from the throne of God, personal correspondence, grocery lists; if it is believed to be an apostles epistle, or was in the middle of the Fourth Century AD, it makes the canon.

This is just one of many big reasons we need the Holy Spirit to clarify when we are dealing with Gods word rather than an apostles personal commentary.

So Roman Catholic priests CAN marry, under tortuous conditions? Interesting.... - 13/02/2013 03:40:48 PM 524 Views
A priest can't marry, but a married person can become a priest. - 13/02/2013 03:51:02 PM 564 Views
Heh, yeah, I guess I slightly mischaracterized what you were saying. - 13/02/2013 05:54:05 PM 656 Views
