I guess it's a part of his attempts to modernize the Tories and appeal to young voters.

It was an odd move all round really. Politically it was divisive with his own party, he's not getting much credit for it at the moment because of how the voting went and the amount of voters he's going to gain probably wouldn't fill a church. I suppose it was the right thing to do, but then that's not a motivation I've ever associated with the Tories!
It's not so much about directly gaining votes as it is about rebranding his party as being in touch with today's society and a viable option for young voters - a bit like his attempts to make the Tories look good on environment issues. I recently saw some polls which seem to confirm an impression one easily gets by looking at British politics and society, that the Tories are still vilified by a considerable part of the population, and widely seen as looking only after their own kind of people. Going forward, those are things they need to get past one way or another.
That said, it's true that in the short term it'll hurt him more than it helps him, and even in the long run it's not really certain that it'll work - that will depend on whether he and his successors stick to that course.
It's going to be some dull back and forth in a PMQ's in 20 years time though:
Tory: we legalised gay marriage
Labour: with our votes
*much chuntering from both sides*
Hehe.
There are no doubt a lot of bad things one can say about David Cameron.

Did you read the Economist's piece on why that announcement was such a clever move?

This is commendable, but his austerity program wrecked the British economy. *NM*
