There is a larger problem in defining what "is" or "isn't" Islam these days, due to the lack of a religious heirarchy, but certainly burning books is not part of any branch of Islam that I am aware of. The Buddha destruction was obviously the direct result of a strict Salafist reading of the prohibition on images. Either way, I think that any group that does this sort of thing is awful.

The Ahmed Baba Institute was supposed to be carefully digitizing all of the texts, but it hadn't had a chance to digitize the vast majority of the texts. It's sad - what have we lost? Texts in Arabic, African languages, Turkish...we may never know what gems were preserved for centuries.
