Probably the most important aspect of being 'alive' is breathing and eating, which includes getting rid of the waste, so it is pretty hard to study either field without occasionally getting yourself up to the knees or elbows in some sort of unpleasant substance, especially since healthy bodies aren't usually the ones you're working on
Seems like an interesting research project though, I'd be curious what the methodology for isolating the helpful strains is, or is planned as.
