You're right--nothing can be good if a better situation might have hypothetically been possible

Except, of course, that isn't true, and everyone knows it isn't true.
Would life be better if the woman's house wasn't broken into, and her day was peaceful and pleasant? Yes. But break-ins happen extremely frequently, and everyone knows this, and knows that all too often they are successful. That's why you can applaud and consider it "awesome" when a break-in attempt is foiled, especially in a way where the criminal faces a level of punishment that I, personally, do not find to be disproportionate. 9/11 is a totally different type of event, one that is rare, and isolated, and therefore clearly terrible because it stands in contrast to what an ordinary day would have been like.
So yes, even though life would be much better if no one's homes were ever broken into, or there were no criminals altogether, that's not the world we live in or could ever live in, which is why a criminal being stopped is a good event and a good story.
And much as Anonymous's post was motivated by a desire to highlight the usefuless of guns, your response is clearly an attempt to mitigate that damage. But just because something you don't like was used to make something good happen, doesn't make it bad.

You have serious problems if you think this is a "great" story.

Story can be fiction or non-fiction, and that's an irrelevant point anyway, Apollo 13 was real
