Sadly, there will likely never be a day when acts of evil and madness don't occur. What I think that we can do is try to figure out why our society is permeated with violence. We probably need to devote a lot more resources to mental health than we presently do. I know lots of people are calling for gun control, but then I remember how Tim McVeigh killed hundreds with some fertilizer and a rented truck. Also, we have had guns for the entire history of the Republic, and submachineguns since the 1920s. We have been capable of these rampages for almost 100 years from a technical standpoint, yet they were isolated until about the last 25 years or so. Why? What is it that has made us more violent?
I'm sure there will be a lot of speculation in the coming days and months. I'm not going to pretend to know the answer. *sigh*.

Chapman wasn't a mass murderer, though. Neither was Hinckley.
