Something good, I'm sure? snoopcester Send a noteboard - 22/11/2012 12:13:06 AM
that that kind of song only becomes a hit when sung in a language nobody in Belgium speaks as first language?

Very tolerant?

Fair enough.

Though Channel Islanders qualify to play for any of the Home Nations. This lead to an English rugby player in the 90s qualifying to play for Scotland through his grandmother, who was born in Jersey.

An understandable reaction. It must be painful to have it rubbed in so hard that you're not Belgian.

Yes, obviously the pain of not being Belgian has always been there... but that song really brought it home to me

A lot of people saying the former is actually contributing to the latter, contradictory as that may seem. Separatism becomes a lot less adventurous when the new state will still be part of the EU and all of the European level laws and regulations remain - and, in the case of Flanders and Catalonia, the euro too. The more the EU gains centralised powers, the less need there is for that other centralised power in Brussels, Madrid or London (unless of course the UK quits the EU, that is).

It does seem contradictory as a first impression but it does make a lot of sense, particularity for somewhere like Catalonia that is contributing more into the central pot in Spain than it gets back and the central government is doing less. Which is also the risk of it - wealthier regions looking for greater independence to allow them to keep more money at the expense of less wealthy regions.

Henning Mankell "We must defend the open society, because if we start locking our doors, if we let fear decide, the person who committed the act of terror will win"
