But very few Scots will let you away with calling them English. It's similar to how Canadians get annoyed when people mistake them for Americans.

However one feels about England or the English, a Scot is a Scot. Throwing in all the history makes it that much worse (and what Scotland went through for independence makes the American Revolution look like a cakewalk, even without getting into Mary Queen of Scots, Charles I and the Old and Young Pretenders.)
