But it's a simple fact the military is trained in the best ways to apply guns to problems. It doesn't mean they're ticking time bombs, but it does mean that if a member of the military happens to ALSO be a ticking time bomb, he's got a lot more training than the average person that makes him more dangerous. Put another way, more aggressive police action wasn't justified because this person was ex-military and had weapons training, but because he'd threatened the womans life and had weapons training that happened to be a result of being ex-military. Threats from people who know how to carry them out are more alarming than threats from those who may or may not have the capability, and if someone trained to kill says, "I'll kill you" it warrants attention.

To sum up: Being ex-military doesn't make a person any more likely to kill anyone who looks at them wrong, but someone who is, themselves, inclined to kill anyone who looks at them wrong, is also more dangerous if they happen to have military training. I'm guessing this guy wasn't all there to begin with (though who knows what he saw in Sarajevo... ) and hoping he'd have been screened out if he'd tried to enter the military here.
