When Obama got re-elected the coal industry, which is absolutely under attack, had to accept it had four more years of siege and a different climate then it would under Romney. No point delaying things and wasting money. Now, an environmentalist can justify this as a necessary evil but it doesn't change that it's happening. You can't pretend you can shackle an industry for the good of all and it doesn't hurt someone. A green might believe it justified, just like a hawk might thing a surgical missile strike on a murderous dictator is, and it may well be true, that doesn't change that there's collateral damage.
i'm sure you're closer to coal country than me, but the fact is that these workers had little reason to believe their livelihoods were at stake. this was, quite literally, a political point judging from what i have read of the people who were laid off this week.
