from the sound of it, he opposed the bill because it would have not given protections for legally allowed abortions under the law. i'm not sure that is an inconsistent position for obama, and certainly does not equate to the same type of shock as mourdock's rape pregnancy comment. it's not like obama is forcing people to get abortions or telling them they should be thankful god intended for them to get pregnant after they were raped after all....

It is hard for Obama to vote against a federal law passed two years before he was in Congress though. The state law he voted against was not restricted to "viable babies" born alive (which IL law already requires doctors exert all measures to save,) but included all fetuses deemed to show any independent sign of life, even if their survival was impossible (i.e. they were non-viable.) The basis of that requirement was that non-viable fetuses were people with constitutional rights. If even non-viable fetuses are legal people, all abortion is murder and therefore illegal, hence Obama voted against the IL Legislature bill.
