However parsed, since Marys supposed sinlessness is through Christs conception, it is retroactive Joel Send a noteboard - 25/10/2012 10:10:48 PM
Else she would not have remained a virgin and Isaiahs virgin birth prophecy would remain unfulfilled. There is nothing noteworthy in sex causing pregnancy. Incidentally, the Roman Catholic doctrine of Immaculate Conception refers not to its manner, but the belief it made Mary sinless—retroactively—through Christs perfection.

There's nothing retroactive about the Immaculate Conception: the Roman Catholic Church holds that Mary was conceived and born free from original sin from day one. Which if you ask me makes no sense and kind of undermines the concept of Jesus being a "son of man", if he is born in parthenogenesis of a woman who's unique and preferred over all other humans in her own right, but my opinion is besides the point here. :P

She is only held to be sinless from birth because she bore Christ; had she not (and thus until she did) she would not be considered to have been sinless at any point. She was still mortal either way, so Christ is just as much "son of man" regardless.
