Well, from a quick googleing I found 400 to 500 deaths a year. (Sweden has a bit above 9 million inhabitants)
1,464 people died in road crashes in 2008 in Australia. Our population is about 21 million. So it seems you're about 50% safer on the roads (assuming pedestrians, cyclists etc. are included in your figures). So your system seems okay at the moment, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
