He is young, photogenic and sounded OK the only time I heard him speak. Joel Send a noteboard - 04/10/2012 12:02:56 AM
That last is no endorsement, just an admission I have not heard him speak much.
Seriously, do the people throwing out these names even know who they're talking about? Jindal is an absolutely incompetent speaker, and he's reviled by a significant portion of Louisiana. He's totally unviable for the national stage, especially after his massive cuts to the state's university system. If Jindal is among the best the GOP has to offer, the party will be dead by 2020.

"A significant portion of [your state here] reviles" every statewide officeholder; such is hyper-partisan politics. The questions are 1) is that portion a majority and 2) will the things that provoke their hatred provoke the nations? Jindals re-election suggests the answer to the first question is "no," and I strongly doubt a majority of America cares much about state college funding (particularly by the president, who has almost no impact on it.)

Meanwhile, the people running (i.e. financing) the GOP are keenly aware remaining the exclusively white male party will permanently marginalize them, and are thus desperate for candidates to conceal a generation or more of ongoing bigotry. Jindal offers the opportunity to pander without jeopardizing social orthodoxy the GOPs owners do not care about, but need to keep their fundamentalist base. That is why they gave Nikki Haley a spotlight at the Republican National Convention: She lets them tick TWO boxes on the affirmative action checklist they publicly loathe. Sure, two different people say she had affairs with them, and the fundies will swallow their tongues when they find out she was married in a Sikh AND Methodist church, but they have nowhere else to go.

I guess it IS a perverse kind of progress: The whole GOP field may have only a single WASP male (JEB) in 2016. Granted, none ever worked for a living, and all are eagerly slamming the door behind them on their way to the top, but at least is is POSSIBLE to succeed in the South and the GOP without being an angry white male.
