Most of the people on that list are rather new on the highest stage, and have yet to prove that they can be more than a flavour of the week. Those with more substantial track records like Ryan or Christie still have obvious downsides as well.

I don't see why the people on that list are somehow more "A-list" than the people who ran in the Republican primary this year, except of course in a post hoc way, they didn't run and so didn't gain the stigma of having lost, nor did they have to run a presidential campaign with all the opportunities for looking like a fool that that creates.
