Why do you believe it is that the United States has higher levels of firearms homicide per capita than most other developed nations? The stats on Wikipedia are unfortunately from 2000, but what they say is that the US had a firearms homicide level of 2.97 per 100,000 people. The only countries on the list with a higher level than that are Barbados, Belarus, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Paraguay, and Zimbabwe. Why do you believe that is? Do you believe that easy access to guns plays a role in that stat, or do you believe that it doesn't?
We have more violence, plain and simple. People who want to do each other are going to use whatever they have. We have one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse countries in the world, with one of the highest standards of living in the world, meaning lots of reasons to want other people dead and lots of free time with which to indulge their impulses. Citing those stats, BTW, is an argument AGAINST gun control. According to you, in the USA it is much more likely that someone is going to try to murder me with a firearm. Therefore, I want easy access to firearms to defend myself. Also, what do you feel about the fact, from the same 2000 numbers, that 65 percent of all homicides in the United States were perpetrated with guns? the only countries on the list with a higher percentage are Colombia, Slovakia, and Zimbabwe. Do you feel that there would be fewer homicides with more strict gun control laws, or do you feel that murderers would simply find other ways to kill even it meant they had to plan more?
It's all irrelevant, even though B. I'd rather more homicides than less freedom. What do you feel about gun control restrictions such as those in Canada, which is America's direct neighbour and which shares a lot of culture and trade with the US? In Canada it is perfectly legal to own many types of guns, but there are more restrictions and registration requirements. In Canada the firearms homicide rate is 0.54 per 100,000 people, and 34 percent of all homicides are committed with guns.
And they have to live in Canada. Hey statboy, how many of those firearm homicides are gang-related? You know, the kind where they have guns purchased illegally in the first place, and very often there is no real "innocent" victim? We have societal problems unlike anything Canada has. Their geographic proximity has nothing to do with the cultural issues, because the flip side is Mexico is equally close. Maybe the reason the homicide rate declines as you move North is that the Mexican population decreases as well. Ever think of that? It is as likely a cause as any other if we go by you stat-in-a-vaccuum analysis.
Do you believe that the right of self-protection (recognized by law within Canada as well, despite our higher level of gun regulation) would be damaged by placing greater restrictions on the type of gun a person can legally own?
Also irrelevant, although yes, because the whole point of owning guns is not self defense or recreation, but armed rebellion.
