Just like with the Aurora shooting, I try to figure out what motivates people to murder others. It's a window into the insanity that might help us prevent these sorts of things.

... wouldn't it more likely be about racism than about religion? It's possible he didn't care about the difference between Muslims and Sikhs, and only saw People Who Are Different. It wasn't necessarily about Muslims at all; there are all sorts of things people can be hateful bigots about. But everything we say at this point is conjecture either way.
It could very well be about racism plain and simple, but personally I would think a white supremacist would go after jews and muslism before he would sikhs, combined with the fact that he was a veteran with a 9-11-01 tattoo. I dont know...and it seems we probably wont ever know becuase he never left a note or anyhting, I would love ot have known his motives.
